corrientes walkabout

matias and his cousin esteban go to med school in corrientes which is just across the river about 20 minutes away. so since i don't know corrientes very well, i decided to take the bus over with them, and then walk around while they went to classes, and meet up, so that i would know how to get back.

we crammed into the bus with barely any room to stand. and when it's that full they always happen to squeeze another four or five people in. guys never give up their seats for women. if you are old or pregnant then you get courtesy... i guess i have to wait until i am 70 or so.

i walked with them to the university, so that i would know where to meet them, and then i set off. corrientes (english = currents)  is way older than resistencia ( eng = resistence), so the streets weren't originally made for cars or at least the heavy traffic that clogs the center. it's very narrow, and the sidewalks are made wide enough for one person.

i walked around 15 blocks to the waterfront, or costanera, and then walked the entire waterfront. tons of people use it to exercise, or the couples go to makeout (there is no lack of PDA around here), guys go to whistle at girls, haha; and so on and so forth. the day was beautiful, and with the breeze that came from the river, it was complete. i even saw a crocodile hanging out in the water on the coast with people playing in the water not that far away.

the waterfront is pretty much the only nice part about corrientes. i am just being honest. the nice houses of course are all along the waterfront. the government officials live there. there is a casino and big hotel, and then a lot of restaurants. matias and i go there often to our favorite restaurant. i don't know why i like it so much, but it's all about the view. i love being close to any sort of water... unless it doesn't move, because that just means mosquitos galore.

by the time i got back to the university, i was really tired. i walked fast and far the entire time.  i probably walked four or five miles in all in just over an hour. i plopped down on a bench, and tried to not cry while i neared the end of the book "The Shack." the boys finally showed up, and after a long wait, and a jammed bus, i made it home...

and then i went to tennis :)
